The History of the Sunderland Hangar

The Sunderland Hangar at Catalina Bay holds a special place in the history of Hobsonville Point. Built in 1927, it housed the Sunderland seaplanes which were initially used for commercial flights. During the Second World War, they were reassigned and provided air and rescue support in the Pacific. The RNZAF continued to use the Sunderland Hangar until the area was designated for special development and was subsequently purchased by Willis Bond in 2016.

In the Ministry of Health’s survey during Auckland’s Level 4 lockdown they observed that 31% of people experienced feelings of loneliness or isolation at times, and 8% reported depressive or anxiety related symptoms (May, 2020).

Human contact is an integral part of our wellbeing and something that has been less attainable this year than ever before.
